more >HIGHLIGHT: a Monthly Reading Series

From September to December, we hosted a monthly reading of quality plays yet to be fully produced in New York. We curated a series of evenings that differed in style, tone, and subject matter. From Pharaohs in Ancient Egypt to an agent’s Hollywood office, this series will take you to unexpected places as you discover these talented playwrights’ unique voices.
Thanks to the generosity of our artists we were able to showcase the talents of over fifty theater artists–from actors to directors to playwrights; reached an audience of over 300 people in the tri-state area; garnered positive press in local and national outlets; built a support base of almost 1500 people, and secured sponsorship from area businesses for our events.

We are excited to present Baba, a wildly unexpected story of love and forgiveness between a daughter and the memory of her estranged Egyptian father. As she embodies his last crucial moments in the U.S. waiting for a passport, she realizes – through literally being in his shoes – why kidnapping his child was the only solution left. Hailed by nytheatre.com as “stunning and revelatory,” Baba and this exciting new artist are not to be missed!
4/28 Join us For BEginnings@HappyEnding

Noor Theatre presents at BEginnings@Happy Ending
April 28th at Happy Ending, 302 Broome Street, New York, NY
7 PM doors, 8 PM start, FREE ADMISSION, 21+
Our friends at The BE Company invited us to curate one of their raucous and lively BEginnings@Happy Ending nights. The goal?
“To support new, artist generated work from writers, actors, musicians and more. See what happens when we give the artists carte blanche. We promise side-splitting laughs, high drama, and the power of the spoken word. BE the first to hear new work straight from the artist’s mouth.”
That is a mission we can definitely get behind. Join us for drinks and highjinks – our lineup (subject to change…) so far includes the hilarious and insightful Negin Farsad, Lena Rizkallah, Jake Kader, Meena Dimian, and Tamar Vezirian. Put it in your calendar now!
more >11/14/2011 HIGHLIGHT: Betty Shamieh’s THE STRANGEST
Our November HIGHLIGHT reading is The Strangest, written by Betty Shamieh and directed by May Adrales. Set in French Algiers, THE STRANGEST is an absurdist murder mystery infused with elements of Middle Eastern oral storytelling traditions and dance. Three Algerian brothers – an artist, a shoemaker, and a thief – vie for the love of the same woman. Their bitter rivalry ends with one brother being inexplicably shot down on a beach by a French stranger in a random act of violence that none of the characters could expect.
9/19/2011 HIGHLIGHT Reading: I am Yusuf, and This is My Brother
Our first HIGHLIGHT reading of 2011 is My Name is Yusuf, and This is My Brother, written by Amir Nizar Zuabi and directed by Erin Mee. It is set in January, 1948 as the British Mandate ends, and a new era begins for the state of Palestine. Amidst the chaos, two brothers — the passionate one carrying an unrequited love for the village beauty and the simple one striving to keep their love alive — discover how war transforms their village and makes them refugees from life as they knew it.
